For three seasons now, the Facebook Falcons have participated in an outdoor co-ed soccer league, competing against other companies and club teams in Silicon Valley. These weekly get-togethers have fostered strong relationships between the various departments that comprise Facebook. We have players representing engineering, user experience, business development, user operations and many more – all competing together under a banner of blue.
Coordinating the Facebook Falcons has also been an opportunity for us to put our own products to the test.... We organize our team and schedule our games using Facebook's Groups and Events applications. When we were short on female soccer players after our first season, we doubled our roster simply by running Social Ads targeted to women in the Facebook workplace network.
We then sit back and let Facebook spread the word about our games to players and spectactors. A day or two before each match, it's typical to see a News Feed story letting us know which of our friends and coworkers are coming out to root us on. Home page reminders ensure that, despite our chaotic schedules, we all remember to lace up our boots and take the pitch together.
Jeff is waiting for Slide to set a date for the long-rumored friendly match.
