UPDATE on Monday, January 31, 2011: Deals is now also available in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. Look for yellow or green tickets when you check in to places in those countries. We also launched a new Deals page at http://www.facebook.com/deals, where you can learn more and find deals being offered near you.

Everyone likes getting a good deal, but it's not always easy to find the right one at the moment you could use one. Imagine that while you're looking for a new place to try for lunch, you could see offers from restaurants nearby on your phone. On the other hand, I already love Zachary's Pizza, so imagine if I were rewarded for coming back there every week with my friends.

Starting today, local businesses will be able to offer you deals when you check in to their place on Facebook. Deals will be rolling out over the next few days and will only be available in the United States at this time.

We launched Places to let you share where you are with your friends and see who's nearby. Now with Deals, you also can see what offers are nearby and share those deals with your friends.

Finding deals near you is easy. On touch.facebook.com or the latest version of Facebook for iPhone, touch "Places" and then touch "Check In." Nearby Places with deals have a yellow icon:

When you touch the Place, you can view the deal and check in to claim it:

Then, just show your phone to the cashier to get your gift or discount:

These deals come from merchants, not Facebook, so check with your local stores for additional details, such as when they're running, how many of the offers are available, and whether a deal is just for you or also for your friends.

You'll see a few different types of Deals: individual deals for a discount, free merchandise or other reward; friend deals where you and your friends claim an offer together; loyalty deals for being a frequent visitor to a place; and charity deals where businesses pledge to donate to a cause when you check in.

Many other businesses are already planning deals in the coming weeks for their U.S. Places, including the following:

24 Hour Fitness: Donating $1 to Kaboom to support children's health for everyone who checks in to its fitness clubs.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema: Hosting a free screening for whichever of their movie theaters gets the most check-ins, as well as giving free souvenir Facebook Places pint glasses just for showing that you've claimed the deal.

American Eagle Outfitters: Offering 20 percent off.

Chipotle: Giving its Facebook guests two entrees for the price of one.

Gap: Giving blue jeans to the first 10,000 customers to claim their deal.

Golden State Warriors: Inviting those who check in to an exclusive event with a basketball player on the NBA team from Oakland, Calif.

Harrah's: Offering a complimentary nightclub admission, buffet or other gift to people who stop by any of its 10 Las Vegas resorts.

      H&M: Offering 20 percent off.

JCPenney: Giving $10 off any $50 purchase.

Lululemon: Sharing the gift of yoga by giving guests a pass to a local yoga studio.

Macy's: Offering 20 percent off select merchandise.

McDonald's: Giving $1 per customer to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

North Face: Donating $1 to the National Park Foundation for every person who checks in at a North Face store or National Park.

The Palms: Upgrading your room or extending your weekend at the hotel another night--on the house.

REI: Donating $1 to a local conservation non-profit when you visit its stores.

San Francisco 49ers: Giving to the first 200 fans who check in the opportunity to buy tickets to a subsequent football game for just (you guessed it) $49.

Starbucks: Donating $1 per guest to Conservation International.

TAO and LAVO: Adding you and a friend to an upcoming guest list at one of the nightclubs for checking in.

Texas Tech: Giving away 100 pairs of tickets.

University of California at Berkeley: Letting football fans who check in form the human tunnel through which the players run.

University of Nebraska: Inviting attendees to a meet-and-greet with a Husker living legend.

If you are a local business that wants to offer deals, you can learn how to get started here.

We hope that these and other deals will help you and your friends find special offers as you check in at your favorite locations. In the coming months, we plan to make Places and Deals available in other countries as well.

The following is part of our series on different ways you can use Facebook to connect with public figures, businesses and organizations around the world.

Whether you're in your hometown or on a holiday in a favorite vacation spot, it's easy to stay updated on all of your favorite local businesses on Facebook. From restaurants and clothing boutiques to cinemas and nightclubs, my friends and I are regularly connecting to the Facebook Pages of local businesses to find out about deals, learn about new offerings and share feedback.

      ...

      Close to Home

Before heading out to shop, you can check the Pages of your neighborhood stores for updates on sales and special events. During the holidays, my friend Morin saw IBISS Boutique of Santa Clara, Calif., post the hours of their pre-Christmas sale. She headed over and finished her gift shopping—at 60 percent off.

On lazy Sunday nights, I like to grab a pizza. One of my favorites is Zachary's Chicago Pizza in Oakland, Calif. By posting awards and accolades to its Facebook Page, Zachary's reminds fans like me that it has some of the best pizza in the Bay Area and entices me to order.

      Local Experts on the Road

Facebook Pages are also useful when you're hitting the road. Before going somewhere, it's easy to check the Pages of your friends who live in the city where you're visiting. From their profiles, you can view the Pages they're a fan of under the "Info" tab.

For instance, a trip to Austin, Texas, isn't complete for me without a stop at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which shares information about their "quote-along" screenings with fans and surveys them about what they'd like to watch. I learned about the theater when my friend Meagan shared their Page with me on Facebook.

As an avid skier, I spend every winter tracking snow conditions at my favorite resorts like Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, Calif., before heading to the slopes. Squaw Valley uses Facebook for iPhone to share weather forecasts, terrain updates and even discount codes. By subscribing via SMS, I receive their latest news on my mobile phone. Even the comments from other Facebook fans help add more detail about what to expect from the snow.

If I can't bring my dog with me to Tahoe, she can still have some cuddly company at Shamrock Ranch Kennels in Pacifica, Calif.--as you can see from the kennel's Facebook photos.

Summer travel might mean a trip to Las Vegas, where I can see nightspot Tao reminding revelers like me that they can simply text "fan tao" to 32665 in order to connect with its Facebook Page. For any local business you love that has a Facebook username such as "www.facebook.com/[mybusiness]", you can text "fan [mybusiness]" to 32665 (FBOOK) to become a fan of that business' Page.

Look for your local favorites on Facebook and become their fan to stay updated with them. If you own a local business, it's free and easy to create a Page for it. You can learn about more ways to use Facebook Pages by becoming a fan of Facebook Pages for more updates.

I can't wait for the Oscars this Sunday night. Not only am I going to be tuning in from home, but starting today, I'm also using Facebook's Live Feed integrations on E! Online, Variety and many more websites stretching across the world—including Bollywood sites Zoom and Saavn—to share predictions for my favorite Academy Award nominees. You can now join the conversations leading up to this weekend's big show honoring exceptional acting and filmmaking.

Simply go to any of the participating sites and log in with your Facebook account via Facebook... Connect. You'll be able to post status updates and see what others are saying about the Oscars in real-time, no matter which participating site your friends are on. For instance, if you're on Variety but your friends are posting on E! Online, you will also see their status update in your Live Feed. This way, the conversation occurs across all the participating websites and Facebook.com. You can even do all of this without leaving Facebook by checking out our Live Feed Page.

Not only is Facebook connecting with the participating websites, but all the sites involved will also be connected to each other—leading to an even more open conversation for all of my friends who are excited about the Oscars. Experience all the fanfare and stardom and share your reactions to Oscar fashion, winners and acceptance speeches—all with your friends on Facebook.

Participating sites (as of today) include:

Jon looks forward to seeing everyone's comments on the Oscars -- both before and during the ceremony.

My friends and I have been watching a lot of movies lately and sharing our reviews on Facebook. After several of them updated their Facebook status to rave about the movie, "Slumdog Millionaire," I finally bought a ticket, and I wasn't disappointed. This year, a lot of conversations about the latest films and most popular TV shows are happening on Facebook, and the timing couldn't be more auspicious.

The movie and entertainment award season is upon us. The Golden Globes and Academy Awards are fast approaching, but the People's Choice Awards,... which picks winners based on the opinions of viewers, kicks off award show season tonight.

This evening's award recipients won't be the sole center of attention, either. Throughout tonight's TV broadcast, the People's Choice Awards will feature comments that you and other fans have left on their Facebook Page.

Appear prescient with smart "guesses" that will dumbfound your friends and family by doing some homework and seeing how the nominees stack up on Watercooler's TV show applications. For instance, the finalists for People's Choice for Best Television Drama are "CSI", "Grey's Anatomy" and "House". Of the three, Watercooler's applications for both "House" and "Grey's Anatomy" are popular, with over a hundred thousand Facebook users combined.

You can even share your predictions of tonight's winners with your friends across the web using Facebook Connect, comment on CBS' The Insider, and you'll have the option to publish that story back to Facebook, where your friends can see it, too.

If you feel like your favorite movie or television show is award-worthy, Facebook helps give you a voice. The British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) uses a Facebook application by Flixster to solicit votes from viewers to help determine award winners. In 2008, the majority of popular voting for BAFTA occurred on Flixster's Facebook application.

Facebook can also put you ahead of the curve with next year's award winners. Beginning next week, Facebook will have previews of many top independent films selected for this year's Sundance Film Festival. Look for more updates on the festival's Facebook Page throughout the next couple weeks.

Whether it's award season or not, people are joining the conversation on Facebook everyday. With tens of thousands of Facebook Pages for your favorite films, TV shows and actors, not to mention a plethora of Facebook applications, you don't have to sit passively through awards season anymore. Facebook allows you to engage and even influence, which makes you a winner, too.

Jon hopes the People's Choice Awards gives his Facebook comment a shout-out tonight, "The people already chose at the box office—'Dark Knight' is the movie of the year!"
